GO ALL IN ON THE VIRAL GLITTER TEARS LOOK

November 20, 2023 by Cat Quinn
From an editorial teardrop shape to a subtle smattering of shimmer under the eyes, Glitter Tears have come to define a range of famous TV and film characters. Before they hit the big screen, the glitter makeup trend originated in Korea, where young people found that accenting the fatty deposit under the eyes, called the “aegyo sal,” made for a more youthful, innocent look.

Like many Korean beauty trends, undereye glitter has now gone global. From the runway to the red carpet, we’re seeing people dress their undereyes in shimmery, light-reflecting silvers and pinks. This trend works as well for everyday as achieving a more fantasy, special occasion look. “Glitter goes through all these iterations of placement – because glitter really is all about placement,” says Mike Obsorne, M·A·C Manager of Educational Development. “Right now, that moment is under the eyes, creating a gorgeous, ethereal makeup look. It has more emotion.”

And it couldn’t be easier to achieve. Simply grab a liquid glitter eye shadow, like Dazzleshadow Liquid in Diamond Crumbles, and gently brush it onto the centre of your bottom lash lines, softly dragging it downward. If you want stronger shine, tap loose Glitter on top. And don’t worry about fallout: this trend looks better as it falls down your cheeks — like real tears!
